Muslim Family Wakes Up to Vandalized Vehicles, Obscene Graffiti

(Helena, AL, 7/15/17) -- A Muslim family woke up to find their car windows smashed, their tires flattened, motor oil poured all over their driveway, and obscene racial slurs spray painted all over their van. The Alabama chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Alabama) called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate this vandalism as a possible hate crime.

“Because of the racist slur used in this vandalism, the recent spike in hate crimes targeting American Muslims and other minority groups and because of the religious and ethnic background of the victims, it would only be prudent to investigate this incident as a possible hate crime,” said CAIR-Alabama Executive Director Khaula Hadeed.

Mayor Mark Hall of Helena released a statement saying, "I have instructed the Chief of Police to use every resource available to find the perpetrator(s) involved in this incident so that arrests can be made. Any crime committed involving hatred or intimidation because of a persons race or religious beliefs will not be tolerated in the City of Helena."
